Temporary Protected Status

We can see if you qualify for Temporary Protected Status (TPS), which is a temporary status granted to nationals of certain countries facing an emergency like war or disaster.

You must show continuous physical presence in the U.S. since the TPS effective date, show continuous residence in the U.S., not be subject to certain criminal or security bars, and apply during the registration period. The requirements can be confusing and are not as simple as they appear. For example, two traffic violations may disqualify you from TPS eligibility, but it also may not, depending on the details of the traffic cases.

As of March 22, 2021, these countries may qualify for TPS:

  • El Salvador

  • Haiti

  • Honduras

  • Nepal

  • Nicaragua

  • Somalia

  • Sudan

  • South Sudan

  • Syria

  • Venezuela

  • Yemen
